Hi Tony. What a pleasant surprise to see the new podcast arrive. I applaud the topic, as it is both historical and timely. Financing wars with market bubbles, eh? Sounds ripped from the current headlines.

Listeners who are interested in the subject and time period might enjoy The Baroque Cycle written by Neal Stephenson. The fictional account includes much on the advent of finance, stock markets, rise of the Royal Society, etc. And it's a cracking good story as well. The books are titled:

Quicksilver, Vol. I of the Baroque Cycle
The Confusion, Vol. II of same
The System of the World, Vol. III of same

Again, if listeners are interested, these books will go a long way in keeping their minds engaged as we collectively wait for the next BTHP to arrive (sorry, couldn't help myself).

I've been reading a fascinating book called The Cousins' Wars by Kevin Phillips. It looks at the English Civil War, the American Revolution, and the American Civil War, and he makes a compelling case for how linked the conflicts actually were. I highly recommend it, and I love the podcast. I'm eagerly awaiting your next opus, so from the Windy City, cheers.

Great episode Tony I really enjoyed it. The Civil war is a particular favourite of mine and it seems strangely forgotten, or at least pretty unpopular as an option in schools these days at GCSE +. Characters like Free John Lillborne should be real icons - and yet are pretty much forgotten. Anyway, thanks, I really enjoyed it. Also, I suggest stick with the length of the podcast - it suits the depth you give topics.

It was fascinating to hear a British telling of our revolutionary period and the US constitution. Most here do not realize the great moral and intellectual foundation that we are built on. I just finished listening to the final episode of this series so thought I'd post my comment here right back where it began. This is a simply wonderful podcast that has been painstakingly put together by Tony Cocks. No radio or television company could do a series of this quality and epic scale anymore because these it wouldn’t stand up commercially or be able to fight for a place within air time available, it would certainly take a brave person to book something like this into the schedule! It’s done purely for the love of the subject matter and is all the better for it, plus of course the format lends its self to epic series like this, who cares if it takes 2 years!
I love Tony’s work; in fact I think Tony, Mike Duncan and Lars Brownworth are the masters of the form. People like Dan Carlin are fine but the way Tony, Mike and Lars go about telling their tales really lets the subject unfold it’s self in a way that draws you in naturally and holds you in a warm and fascinating bubble, it’s immensely pleasurable. They don’t go in for theatrics or over sensationalising already amazing history, they tell the story in a way that lets the history be the star and in doing so have become towering figures within the genre of the history podcast, no one else comes close to these 3.
I can’t wait to see were Tony takes us next!

I've been listening since the beginning and am a big fan, however your pronunciation of the city Wilhelmshaven drove me nearly insane. The names means Williams's Harbour the s belongs to the first word not the second. A pronunciation closer to Williams's Haven would be better. though will helms half en would be even closer to the german.

Hi, I found your podcast recently, and am catching up fast.

I prefer the more narrative episodes, as in your influences on the American constitution and the current Royal Navy series. I found the Battle of Britain series got too bogged down in the day-by-day statistics for my taste.

One nit to pick, if I may. I was astonished to hear in this exploration episode that Batavia was located in the West Indies. As I'm listening in Jakarta (formerly Batavia), I have to tell you it was in the East Indies, now Indonesia.

Thanks for yet another great podcast. I've been refreshing my iTunes everyday in anticipation of new episodes.

Just one thing about the last podcast: At approximately 21:55 you mention that Nelson was promoted to commander and post captain to the brig Badger and that the term 'post captain' was used to identify a person that commanded a vessel but didn't hold the rank of captain. But surely the correct term for the rank Nelson held in the Badger must be 'master and commander'. In the navy of Nelsons time, it was actually the rank of 'post captain' that was the all important career goal of every junior officer. To be 'made post' meant that promotion to admiral was automatic, "death, dishonor and disease notwithstanding", as you so eloquently put it.

"Master and commander", ranking above lieutenant but below post captain was a rank that far from all officers ever held in their careers since some were promoted directly from lieutenant to post captain and other went other paths. This rank was a stepping stone for some officers like Nelson, but proved a career dead end for others.

As for the title of "captain" this is a term that ads to the confusion. By naval custom, any naval officer who commands a ship is addressed as "captain" while aboard that ship, regardless of their rank.

Hey Tony, finished the podcast. You don't fool around in comprehension and quality do ya? Took me three battery charges on the mp3 to get through it (kidding). It has been a long wait, but a great cast, loved the voice and tone changes used when doing a quote, gives the whole thing a great depth. Overall its up to the excellent standards you have set yourself and we know and appreciate.

But one question? when's the next one out?? hmm? hmm? No resting on your laurels, you caused the addiction you have to feed it, already hungry for more ;)
